Since 1998 we have worked closely with students, teachers, teacher-educators and parents, particularly in mathematics and science education, to introduce innovative methods through which children will understand and enjoy what they are being taught. Conducting workshops, mainly in-service as well as for trainee teachers, designing, producing, procuring and distributing low-cost teaching and learning materials (TLMs) for promoting activity-based education, have all been a part of this endeavour.

We have set up Maths Labs in many schools and designed Science Discovery Rooms. Presently we are engaged in a programme called Design and Development of Innovative Curriculum for Primary Mathematics in four progressive schools in NCR. This involves curriculum designing, module making, modeling classroom transactions, assessment and evaluation.

We run an experimental school for first-generation learners involving the pre-primary and primary levels in Shakurpur in West Delhi, where we are located. The school follows an integrated project-based approach involving non-graded teaching apart from having innovative methods in mathematics.

We are a non funded, not-for-profit social enterprise. We intend to carry forward our work by establishing linkages with all organizations and individuals concerned with providing quality education to our children to enable them to embark on the path of inquiry-based learning.

Out-reach

Over the years these Math Tools have been used in hundreds of schools across the country and abroad, whether in the classroom or in the Mathlab. About 600 schools have integrated these tools and activities into their on-going curricula spread across various boards – CBSE, ICSE, IB or State boards on an on-going basis.

Mathematics Curriculum development and implementation programme with Government schools

In the current year Jodo Gyan is making intervention in grade I and II mathematics in 7143 government schools in Punjab. The last year pilot project has also been extended to grade III in 477 government schools in Patiala District, Punjab.

In Meghalaya also, it is being implemented in 1000 government schools in Grade I and II in East Khasi, West Khasi, Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.

Jodo Gyan Brochure

Mathematics has been feared by people over the centuries. Today also lakhs of children in our country fear mathematics. It is felt as a dry subject that few seem to love. Yet we feel that mathematics builds on something that we all possess – the sense of quantity. It leads to see beautiful patterns and symmetries in the world around us. It helps us to reason logically and consistently. This empowers us to look deep into the mysteries of the world – whether of astronomy or of genetics. It also helps us to participate in today’s world as responsible citizens –critically examining issues whether of global warming or of the increasing gap between rich and poor.
How do we make this birthright of every child a real possibility- that is the challenge.

We in Jodo Gyan feel that by changing the way we teach in the class, we can contribute to this process. We also need to get away from thinking of mathematics just as a collection of rules for addition, subtraction and other operations and an array of formulae- to start seeing it as a way of thinking, modelling and reasoning about the reality
